Report of Alan Chambre on 2 collective petitions (55 people, and 14 people all of Lichfield, Staffordshire, including the sheriff and a baronet) on behalf of John Hodson, servant, convicted at the 'last' Shropshire Assizes at Shrewsbury on 19 March 1803, for the embezzlement of money and property bills, of Thomas Highway/Thomas Heighway, tanner, on 22 January [1803]. Evidences supplied by William Beaumont, the victim's brother in law; Ann Partington, servant; Mrs Beaumont, wife of William Beaumont; John Davies, Humphrey Roberts and Edward Jones, hostler at the Hay Gate Inn. There is a covering letter to a petition from J. Wrothsley. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner had a wife and 5 small children, has lived in Litchfield all his life, has worked honestly for the prosecutor (often trusted with money) for 15 years and had always been considered a sober and honest man. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: pardon on condition of 2 years imprisonment. Folios 102-109.
