Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (4 people of Covent Garden, Middlesex, trades given and the prosecutor) on behalf of Humphrey Goodwin, costermonger, convicted at the Old Bailey in October 1802 [actually December 1802], for the theft of a basket and a bushel of apples, value 5/-, property of Charles Crouch, fruit salesman at Covent Garden, on 11 November 1802. Evidences supplied by Robert Condon, watchman; John Crawley, servant of the victim; and Humphrey Lane, watchman. Grounds for clemency: youth (19 years), he did not steal the apples, he was given them by a man to carry to Westminster, first offence and he had 'Aged and disconsolate' parents. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 101-105.
