Responsibility for ancient monuments in Wales passed successively from the Office of Works to the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Public Building and Works and, on 1 April 1969, to the Secretary of State for Wales. The Ancient Monuments Board for Wales and the Historic Buildings Council for Wales both now reported to him.
In April 1991, responsibility for ancient monuments passed to Cadw, the Welsh Historic Monuments Executive Agency.
