Administrative / biographical background

Following the establishment of the Welsh Office in 1965, a Finance Division was in place by 1966. Initially the Division was responsible for all financial matters dealt with by the Welsh Office, but by 1974 a separate unit within a newly named Finance and General Group had been set up to deal with financial matters relating to the Health Service in Wales. Subsequently other units were set up to deal with the finances of other functions within the Welsh Office. In 1976 the Finance and General Group changed its name to the Finance Group.
