Japan. (4) 'Yokohama Rough Sketch': copy of plan illustrating the defence measures proposed in Brine's despatch. Also shows the 'Japanese Town', 'Foreign Settlement' (including European legations, business houses etc), canals, swamp; named gunboats moored offshore. Scale: 3 inches to 800 feet. Compass indicator. Forwarded for the information of the Inspector General, Royal Engineers, 28 June 1863. (2-3) Copy of a despatch dated 10 May 1863 from Captain Frederick Brine, Royal Engineers, to Rear Admiral Kuper, Commander-in-Chief. Dimensions of sheets: (2-3) 20 cm x 33 cm; (4) 45.7 cm x 75 cm.
