China: Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. 'Sketch map of the country around Sow-Chow from a plan by Major Gordon, RE, 1863': map of the environs of Suzhou, covering the area between Nanjing, Chongming island (now part of Shanghai) and Ningbo, showing land and towns held by imperial forces and Taiping rebel forces. Scale: 1 inch to 12 miles. Notes state that a zincographed copy of the map was prepared at the Topographical Depot of the War Office, and that the map is inaccurate. Coloured MS additions show stages in the campaign, with dates; a pencilled note suggests that these additions might be in the hand of Major [Charles 'Chinese' Gordon]. Various pencilled corrections, including one altering the scale to 1 inch to 8.5 miles.
