Description

Central and South America. 'A New & Exact Map of the Coast, Countries and Islands within ye Limits of ye South Sea Company, from ye River Aranoca [i.e. Orinoco] to Tierra Del Fuego, and from thence through ye South Sea [i.e. the Pacific Ocean] to ye North Part of California & c. with a View of the General and Coasting Trade-Winds And Particular Draughts of the most important Bays, Ports, & c. According to ye Newest Observations, By Herman Moll Geographer'; 'To the Rt. Honble. Robert Earl of Oxford & Mortimor [sic] & c. This map & Sea Draughts is most Hbly. dedicated by H. Moll': also shows land as far north as Charleston [in South Carolina] and showing the Cape Verde Islands and part of the west African coast. Various reference notes, including one referring to the inaccuracy of rival mapmakers' work. Compass indicators. [Published and] sold by Moll and by [John] King. Insets: (i) Maps of Acapulco (now in Mexico), the Gulf of Fonseca (now in Honduras), the Gulf of Nicoya (now in Costa Rica), the Isthmus of Darién and the Bay of Panama (now in Panama), Guayaquil (now in Ecuador), the Galapagos Islands, Valdivia (in Chile), the island of Chiloé and the nearby coast of Chile, Juan Fernández, the Straits of Magellan, and the non-existent Pepys Island. (ii) Chart of the Atlantic Ocean, showing the relative positions of England and the Orinoco River.

Robert Harley became Earl of Oxford and Mortimer in 1711 and died in 1724; presumably the map was originally produced during that time. Reinhartz, however, suggests a date of 1726.
