Various reference notes. Dedication in a decorative cartouche, with a coat of arms. Scale: 1 inch to about 25 leagues (scale bars also marked in Dutch and Spanish miles). Compass indicator. Printed for John Bowles and Thomas Bowles. Insets: (i) View of Mexico City, with a reference table to buildings. (ii) Maps of the harbours at Saint Augustine (in Florida), Vera Cruz (now in Mexico), Havana (in Cuba), 'Porto Bella' [?Portobelo, now in Panama] and Cartagena (now in Colombia).
The dedicatee is probably William Paterson, co-founder of the Bank of England, who accompanied an expedition to Darién (now in Panama) in 1698 and died in 1719; presumably the map was originally produced in or before that year. Reinhartz suggests a date of 1715.
