Description

'A New Map of the North Part of America claimed by France under ye Names of Louisiana, Mississipi [Mississippi] [sic], Canada and New France with ye Adjoining Territories of England and Spain ...1720'; 'To Thomas Bromsall, Esq; This Map... is most Humbly Dedicated By H. Moll Geographer': covering the area between Newfoundland, Guadeloupe and California, with the limits of [French territory] in blue, [British territory] in yellow and [Spanish territory] in pink; much of the north-western portion of the map is labelled as 'Parts Unknown'. Various reference notes. Decorative border surrounding the title; dedication in a decorative cartouche with a coat of arms. Scale: 1 inch to about 90 miles at 40°N; (scale not constant because of the projection). Compass indicator. Mercator's projection. Partly based on French maps and maps by Captain Nairn, Mr Blackmore and Mr Berisford; [published and] sold by Herman Moll, and by Thomas Bowles, John Bowles and John King. Insets: (i) view of a Native American fort on the Susquehanna River; (ii) map of Annapolis Royal harbour, Nova Scotia; (iii) map of the mouths of the Mississippi River and the Mobile (now Alabama) River.
