Nature of request
The petition asks that writs might be sent to repay the merchants of Prussia for the prises taken from them in Lynn at the King's command for the costs of the embassy to Prussia, in the following form.Instructions follow for writs to be sent to the Mayors and Bailiffs of towns listed in a roll instructing them to levy the sums listed in the roll from those whose names appear there, and send them to the Mayor and Bailiffs of King's Lynn by the octaves of St Hilary next at the latest, so that they can repay the Prussian merchants when they ask; and to inform the council of the names of those who will not contribute. Also instructions to send writs or an entire roll to John de Brunham, formerly Mayor of King's Lynn, and John Drolle and John Prentys, Bailiffs of King's Lynn, concerning the costs of the embassy to Prussia, and instructions to receive from those whose names appear in the roll the sums that concern them, and to pay the King a certain sum, which he paid to Gerde Okenbrok and John White, merchants of Prussia, for certain money taken from them in arrest in King's Lynn, by the octaves of Hilary at the latest. And if they do not receive enough money, so that neither the King nor those Prussian merchants who are still to be paid can be paid, then they are to inform the council of the names of those who will not contribute, so that a swift remedy can be ordained.
