Reference
SC 8/259/12941
Date
[c. 1352- ? c. 1365]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Scarborough.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Scarborough state that their quay has been destroyed by a storm, to their great ruin, as they can no longer provide moorings for merchants, who enable them to pay their farm, or a refuge during storms. They are greatly impoverished by the two pestilences and cannot afford to rebuild it without aid. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The King and council wish to advise themselves on this matter.
Places mentioned
Scarborough, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Great Yarmouth, [Norfolk]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland].
Note
CPR 1350-4 p.228 is dated 10 February 1352, and would seem to be in response to this petition. However, SC 8/209/10414 shows that they are still appealing for financial help in rebuilding the quay in 1357, and the mention here of two pestilences might suggest a date in the early 1360s.
