Nature of request
The burgesses of Oxford state that because of certain suggestions made to him, Edward I took the assize of bread and ale, which used to contribute to their farm and which brings the King 100 s. annually, into his hand, without calling the burgesses to judgment, although the amount of their farm is not reduced. They have sued from parliament to parliament on this, until Edward II ordered that the rolls and remembrances of the Exchequer be searched and the King and council informed. It has now been returned in Chancery in this parliament that the King seized the assize into his hand as they claim. They ask the King and council to take advice on this and to do justice.
Nature of endorsement
He is to come and provide information before the council.The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ that, when they have seen and considered how the assize was seized etc. and for what reason, and if the burgesses had the aforesaid things in aid of their farm etc., and how and from what time and how much the assize was worth to the said burgesses, and what it brings now to the King; and if they can find that they had the assize in aid of their farm, and that the King is now served of the 100s., they are further to give the said burgesses a reasonable allowance according to their discretion.
