Occupation
Abbot of Chertsey
Nature of request
The Abbot of Chertsey states that he and his predecessors have from time immemorial had a tithe of all wild and domesticated animals and of the agistments of herbage and pannage within Windsor park, but that William le Mareschal, keeper of the King's livestock and the Constable of Windsor castle have lately withheld from them the tithe of foals and wild animals and have given it to the Abbot of Waltham. The Abbot of Chertsey petitioned the last parliament at Westminster on this, and as a result writs were sent to William and the Constable to deliver these tithes to them; but they have done nothing, continuing to favour the Abbot of Waltham. And the Abbot of Waltham has acquired a writ under the privy seal to the Constable to deliver to him the tithe of wild animals which have been and will be taken in his time, which will bar the Abbot of Chertsey from his tithes. He asks that he might either have delivery of the tithes or be released from the twenty cartloads of hay that he is obliged to find in return.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent into Chancery, and the Chancellor, when he has called before himself the said Abbots and heard their arguments, is further to do what is just and reasonable, on the advice of the council.
