Description
Petitioners
William de Brewouse.
Name(s)
de Brewouse, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Brewouse states that after the death of Adam de Bavent, his tenant, he seized into his hand the manors of Wiston, Chiltington, Slaughter and Heene in the name of wardship, because of the minority of Adam's heir. But William de la Marche, Edward I's Treasurer, sent a writ to the escheator to seize the manors into the King's hand, and said, wrongly that he held other lands in chief of the King, in order to take the wardship of the lands and the marriage of the heir from William. William asks that this might be inquired into by Domesday Book and the Book of Fees, and by other remembrances of the Exchequer, and that William might be given a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The petition is to be delivered into Chancery, and the inquisitions returned in Chancery after the death of Adam de Bavent are to be examined, and how the lands and tenements were delivered out of the King's hand; and justice is then to be done.
Places mentioned
Westlyston (Wiston), [Sussex]

Probably datable to the early years of the reign of Edward II by the references to the King's father and to the death of Adam de Bavent, who was dead by 5 December 1292 (CFR 1272-1307, p.317).
