Reference
SC 8/259/12932
Date
[1307-1327]
Description
Petitioners
People of Westminster.
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
The people of Westminster, who have no possessions except their houses and rents in Westminster from which to live, and who have the ancient custom of lodging the King's officials, state that the King's officials are now occupying their houses and other buildings to such an extent that they are driving out their tenants, so that they are deprived of their rents; and they also wrongly occupy the taverns. They request a remedy, so that these liveries might be dealt with as they were in the time of the King's father, and in the time when Peter de Chavent was his Steward.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio. The Steward and Marshal are to be ordered to have the ancient liveries practised and not new ones, in accordance with the ancient custom, and as was ordained in the time of the late King Edward.
Places mentioned
Westminster.
People mentioned
Peter de Chavent (Champvent), steward of Edward I
Edward [I], King of England.
Note
Datable to the reign of Edward II by the hand, the Latin endorsement and the reference to Peter de Chavent, Steward 1290-c. 1292, and probably from earlier rather than later in the reign.
