Description
Petitioners
Merchants of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The merchants of London complain about illegal kiddles, stakes and piles, which catch fish that is too young, and therefore useless, to the great harm of the people, and also block the river Thames, so that ships cannot travel along it safely. They ask that these obstacles, which are contrary to the Great Charter and to the grants of the King's progenitors, might be removed, and that the Mayor might be instructed to deal with this, as he did in the past.
Nature of endorsement
Faithful people are to be appointed in Chancery in various counties where it is necessary to survey the kiddles, stakes and piles, and to inquire into this etc., as is the custom, and to remove all kiddles, and also stakes and piles which are harmful to those passing with ships along the Thames, and to punish the trespassers who afterwards offend in this way, and to do other things required by these things etc.
Places mentioned
London
River Thames
River Medway.
