SC 8/259/12917
Date
[? c. 1328]
Description
Petitioners
People of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of London state that writs for various courts commonly give a period of fifteen days before the people to whom they are addressed are to appear, which does not give them long enough to take counsel on their business, and also, as they are merchants and live by their merchandise, they cannot be certain when they will be in the city, so that no-one wishes to take action by writ. They also state that the Steward and Marshal have citizens of London impleaded before them, and will not allow the Mayor and people to have an attorney to claim their free men before them, contrary to their franchises and to the Great Charter. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first point: the King is not advised to do this. With regard to the second point: they are to sue a writ in Chancery according to the points of their charter.
Places mentioned
London
Westminster.
Note
CCR 1327-30 p.325, which is dated 22 October 1328, is clearly a response to SC 8/57/2848. This petition would seem likely to be an earlier petition, partly on the same subject.
