Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Monk Bretton.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Monk Bretton state that they, together with Godfrey de Staynton, John Bullok, and others were maliciously indicted before the justices assigned to inquire into the goods of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster and others of his company with having taken the chattels of the Earl of Hereford at Barnsley, and were condemned, although they did not have any of these goods. They sued to have the King's grace and to be discharged, and the King, by the influence of Hugh le Despenser the son, charged them with £300, to be paid in instalments; and, because the others paid nothing, all of this fell on the Prior. They ask that they might be released or acquitted of this debt.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that it is to be done if it pleases the King; and for that reason, before the King.[Deleted] He is to be discharged of what remains to be paid to the King by reason of the payment by instalments, provided that they answer to the Earl's executors according to the statute ordained for this.Coram rege.Because it is agreed in this parliament that the executors of those who were of the quarrel are to have recovery against those who took their goods, they are to be discharged of the money thus to be paid by instalments if they were charged in this way for the Earl's goods.
