Description
Petitioners
Arnold Micol, merchant, former servant of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster.
Name(s)
Micol, Arnold
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
merchant, former servant of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster
Nature of request
Arnold Micol states that he has petitioned the King in the present parliament, stating that he was taken in the Earl's company and his quarrel and imprisoned at York until he made fine in 500 marks to the King for his delivery, and that he, Robert Hastang, William de Deen, Alexander de Bergh, Peter de Morer, John de Warton and Robert de Melton made a recognisance to the King for that sum, and asking that they might be quit of what is in arrears of that sum and that what they have paid, of which the King was not served, might be restored to them. He was given a response that if it was found that he was of the quarrel of the Earl of Lancaster he and the others were to be quit of what was in arrears. The Earl of Lancaster has since attested to the Chancellor that this is so, but he and the others can have no writ except to inquire if the recognisance was made for that reason or not. He asks that the Chancellor might be ordered again to send a writ, based on the Earl's testimony, to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to annul the recognisance and to return to them what has been levied.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is attested by the Earl of Lancaster and other nobles that the said Arnold was taken at Boroughbridge in the quarrel of Thomas, formerly Earl of Lancaster, and imprisoned for that reason, he is to have a writ of Chancery to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that if they can ascertain that the recognisance mentioned here was made for Arnold's release from prison and not for any other reason, then they are to have Arnold and the others mentioned above discharged and acquitted of what is in arrears of the aforesaid 500 marks.
