Date
[? c. 1316]
Description
Petitioners
Griffin de la Pole, son of William de la Pole.
Name(s)
Pole, Griffin
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly faded and hard to read.] Griffin, son of William de la Pole, states that his father held the land of Mawddwy as one of the parceners of Powys of the King, and that Griffin has complained in the King's court that John de Cherlton is withholding his inheritance from him in this land, and that he is trying to distrain him to do homage to him, which he should not do. He also complains that John has taken crops and livestock from this land, and has banished . . . . He asks the King that he might be able to do homage to him as his liege lord and have his land, together with the issues that John has wrongly taken during the last seven years and more. And he asks that a remedy might be ordained for the great wrongs that John has done him.
Nature of endorsement
At common law.
Places mentioned
Mouthe (Mawddwy), [Merioneth, Wales]
Powys, [Wales].
People mentioned
William de la Pole
John de Cherlton (Charlton).
Note
A related complaint from John de Cherlton against the petitioner is enrolled on the roll of the parliament of January 1316 (Rot. Parl. vol I p.356b), and this petition would seem to date from around the same time or perhaps later, as the petitioner appears to be of age here.
