Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Tavistock.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Tavistock state that the King's father had granted them the stannary of Devon with the water of Dartmouth for a term of seven years, and that they have held the stannary by this commission for three years and more, and that the present King has confirmed it in parliament at Westminster, as can be seen from the transcript of the commission sewn to this petition. Now, however, he has granted the stannary to Richard Caleware for term of life, to their great harm, as the farm for the stannary is still demanded of them, and they have found security to pay it for seven years, and have had a great outlay for the stannary. They ask that the commission made to Richard might be annulled, and that they might have and enjoy their term.
Nature of endorsement
The Abbot, Prior and convent are to be ordered to retain the stannary until the end of their term, according to the commission given to them, notwithstanding the command that they are to deliver it to the said Richard. And Richard is also to be ordered not to meddle with the stannary during their term.
