de Barton, John

merchants
Nature of request
John de Barton and his companions state that when they were in the port of Fecamp with a ship full of merchandise, they were attacked by the men of the Abbot of Fecamp, who stole their goods and killed John's brother Richard. The King's father sent writs to the Abbot to make restitution to them, but he failed to do so, so he sent writs to various sheriffs to levy the value of their goods from the Abbot's merchants coming to England, with the result that the merchants have ceased to come, and execution of these writs cannot be made. They request execution against the Abbot's lands and tenements, goods and chattels, in England instead.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be delivered into Chancery, and when the process mentioned in the petition has been seen there, they are to inform themselves on the same process by all other means they can, and if they find that the said Abbot was a trespasser or maintainer, or that the goods came to his profit, execution is then to be made on the Abbot's goods and chattels in England.
Places mentioned
Fecamp, [Normandy, France].
People mentioned
Abbot of Fecamp
Richard [de Barton], brother of John de Barton
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
