Description
Petitioners
Hugh Tyrel, Lord of Castleknock.
Name(s)
Tyrel, Hugh
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Hugh Tyrel, Lord of Castleknock states that he holds the barony of Castleknock of the King in chief, for the service of three knights with horses and arms at Dublin castle whenever service is demanded, and that he was accused of failure to do this service by Stephen, Bishop of Waterford, when he was Justiciar and Treasurer of Ireland, but he was acquitted by a jury. And now again Nicholas de Clere, Treasurer of Ireland, is distraining him for this service, saying that he has not done it during his time. He requests a remedy, that he might hold his barony according to the tenor of his charters for the aforesaid service, and a writ to the Treasurer to cease these distraints, as he was acquitted before the previous justiciar.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Castleknock, [County Dublin], Ireland
Thwetyne [unidentified], [County Dublin, Ireland]
Twetdrum [unidentified], [County Dublin, Ireland]
Dublin, [Ireland].
People mentioned
Stephen [de Fulbourn], Bishop of Waterford, Justiciar of Ireland, Treasurer of Ireland
Nicholas de Clere (Clare), Treasurer of Ireland
[Henry III], King of England.
Note
Dated to 1287 by Sayles, with reference to (presumably related) payments by Tyrel recorded in the receipt roll for that time. Stephen, Bishop of Waterford, was replaced by Nicholas de Clare as Treasurer of Ireland in 1285. Hugh Tyrel is mentioned frequently in documents of this period (Cal. Docs Ireland, vol. III, pp.49, 100, 101, 142, 456, 417). Brooks states that the documents at C 47/10/15, dating to 1293, form the response to the petition. He also includes a discussion on the identity of 'Thwetyne' and 'Twetdrum', which are probably divisions within the barony of Castleknock.
