Description

Sub-prior and convent of St Martin, Dover.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged.]The Sub-prior and convent of the church of St Martin of Dover complain of their impoverishment as a result of ill-treatment by the monks of Holy Trinity, Canterbury, whom the Archbishop of Canterbury had placed over their church, with the result that the Archbishop has been expelled from his keeping of the church and the King has entered. Their numbers are also greatly reduced, and they cannot carry out the service of God, alms, and other things contained in their charters. They ask that they might be able to appoint a perpetual Prior from among themselves in future, and that their charter might be emended, so that they might no longer be a cell of any other church, but that their house might be in the King's keeping.
