Council.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged.]The petition states that one John Cruwys had previously petitioned the King about rights he claimed to certain lands and tenements in Devon, in the King's hand because of the forfeiture of John Blake, so that he had a commission to William Rikill and John Cassy to inquire into his right. Two inquisitions have been held, and two sessions at Exeter, at which John Cruwys has browbeaten and intimidated the jurors into finding in his favour, although no title of right can be found for him. And now another commission is about to be granted to him. The petition asks that William Rikill and John Cassy, and John Copeleston, the King's steward in Devon, might be summoned to give evidence on oath about John's behaviour, and whether the commission was properly held or not.
