Nature of request
John de Trailly, son and heir of Walter de Trailly, who held of the King in chief, states that his father leased the manor of Ludgershall in Buckinghamshire to master William de Lue for term of life for £40 annually. William lived for three years after Walter, and during that time he paid nothing to the King, in whose hand the lands were because of John's minority. After William's death the King took the manor into his hand, and after a dispute between John's friends, on his behalf, and William Touchet, William's heir, it was adjudged that William had no right to the manor, which would remain in the King's hand until John's majority. William continued to sue, and brought an assize of novel disseisin. John could not be present through illness and answered through a bailiff, for the King his guardian and for himself; but the assize went against him and now damages have been awarded against John and are being demanded of him. He requests a remedy, and asks that the manor might be taken back into the King's hand, as a judgment was brought on the King's seisin without consulting him, and that John might answer to everyone on this according to the common law.
