Description
Petitioners
John le Moigne (Monk) and his companions, the King's tenants of the Channel Islands.
Name(s)
Moigne (Monk), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John le Moigne and his companions, the King's tenants of the Channel Islands, state that they have complained in various parliaments of wrongs inflicted upon them by Otto de Granson and his ministers, and that the King and his council have often sent justices to the islands to hear and determine these grievances, and in particular in the parliament at York in the twelfth year of the King's reign, John de Stonhore, William de Burne, Nicholas de Cheyny and John de Carteret were appointed as justices of oyer et terminer. Otto and his ministers, seeing that this would not be to their liking, bribed Hugh le Despenser the son and Robert de Baldok to send Henry Spigurnel and William de Denom to undo the good work that William de Burne and his companions had done; and they committed many wrongs against the King's tenants there, evidence of which is sewn to this petition. The petitioners request a remedy, and also that justices might be appointed who are loyal and not suspected.
Nature of endorsement
Concerning the exceptions attached to the present document, insofar as they concern the laws and customs of the Isles, there is to be an inquiry in those parts by the King's justices who are to be sent there soon. And the King is to be informed so that he justice can be done to the petitioners.
