SC 8/257/12834
Date
[1321-1327]
Description
Petitioners
People of Guernsey.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Guernsey stated that in his parliament at York in the twelfth year of his reign, the King commissioned John de Stonor, William de Burne, Nicholas de Cheyny and John de Cartret to correct the wrongs done by Otto de Grantsoun, Keeper of the Channel Islands, and his ministers, and by John de Frisingfeld and his fellow-justices, and the attorney of the people of the Channel Islands requested judgment on Otto, as on one who has forfeited his estate. The justices stayed proceedings until the next parliament, that is, the parliament held at Westminster at Michaelmas in the fourteenth year, when Thomas de Estfeld, attorney of the people of the Channel Islands, came to sue a judgment against Otto for the King. But he was beaten and wounded by Otto's people in London, so that he did not dare to sue further, and the justices were told to continue in their eyre, and to try the 360 bills not yet tried: but they have not done so. The petitioners request a remedy, and also a judgment that Otto might be expelled from the islands as a person who has forfeited all his estate for the wrongs he has done.
Nature of endorsement
The process is to be examined and justice is to be done.
