Nature of request
John de Barentin petitions on behalf of himself and of the other heirs of William de Barentin, and states that Robert de Loyset, the Prior of Wenlock and the Bailiffs of the Channel Islands were appointed justices to hold assizes in the Channel Islands and that they appeared before them concerning their inheritance, to explain their title to it; but that the justices refused to allow them an inquest or judgment as to whether they should have one. They ask that they might hold the Fief Paisnel as their father and grandfather did.
Nature of endorsement
The complainant says that Richard de Grey, formerly Keeper of the aforesaid islands, entrusted these tenements to Dru de Barentyn, the grandfather of the complainant, in exchange for other tenements in the island of Alderney, of which the King is now seised. And he asks to vindicate this etc. But because this was the deed of the King's Steward, therefore before the King. He is to come on his day before the justices on the morrow of the Trinity. And justice is to be done to him.

This petition would seem most likely to date from shortly after CPR 1292-1301 p.433, which is dated 24 August 1299.
