Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of St Swithin, Winchester.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of church of St Swithin, Winchester, state that at the request of Edward II they provided a corrody for Menald de Fountz, servant of Edward II, and in return were granted a charter that they and their house would not be charged by the king or his heirs with finding any more corrodies. Then at the request of Edward III they provided a corrody for Henry Hwyff, his servant, of their own free will, and were granted another similar charter. Now a master John de Mildenhale has come to have the same corrody that Menald de Fountz had, and is suing to the King for it. They ask that their charters might have their force.
Nature of endorsement
When the Prior is led in response he is to produce his charters in his defence and to have justice.
Places mentioned
Winchester, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England

John de Mildenhale (Mildenhall).
Note
Printed in Rot. Parl. vol. II p. 198a (no. 86) as from the parliament of January 1348. This date would accord with the hand, but seems a little late if the corrody is an immediate replacement for one originally granted on 24 March 1323 (CCR 1318-23 p.704).
