Nature of request
The Prior and convent of the church of St John of Pontefract state that they had the advowson of the church of St Sampson, York, of the gift of King Stephen and the confirmation of all the kings since then, but that they were ousted from it by the Archdeacon of Richmond. They recovered it in the King's court against Robert de Wodehouse, the present Archdeacon of Richmond, and a writ has been issued to have the inquest in the eyre of York brought, in order to inquire into the Prior and convent's right; but because of favour and maintenance, this inquest cannot be produced to tell the truth. The Prior and convent ask that they might have this advowson according to their gift and confirmations.
