Reference
SC 8/257/12819
Date
[1305]
Description
Petitioners
Chancellor, master and clerks of the University of Cambridge.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Chancellor, master and clerks of the University of Cambridge ask that those with meat, fish or other victuals to sell might be able to sell at retail in Cambridge, both to the scholars and to the townspeople, notwithstanding the claim of the burgesses that only they can sell at retail within their franchise.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] It is answered by the petition of the University of Oxford.[On dorse] It is answered by the petition of the University of Oxford in this way: it is to be prohibited by writ of Chancery that this should be done there or in other towns of England; but that they are to allow these merchants to sell their merchandise by their own hands, provided that they do not sell at retail, on pain of severe penalty and imprisonment, in the King's court when they wish to sue there.Expedited.
Places mentioned
Cambridge, [Cambridgeshire]
Oxford, [Oxfordshire].
Note
Memoranda de Parliamento p.46 (no. 72) prints a similar petition from the University of Oxford with a similar response, which would seem to be the Oxford petition mentioned by the endorsement: this would date this petition to the Lent parliament of 1305.
