Description

de Sutton, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Sutton makes two requests;1) He requests an allowance for four acres of meadow and six acres of pasture usurped from him in Kingston upon Hull, between the bridge of Bilton in Holderness and the River Hull.2) He states that he had a ferry over the River Hull to Kingston, but that the King has granted a common ferry to his burgesses of Kingston upon Hull, to John's great harm. He requests grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
To the first: he is to have a writ of Chancery to William de Houk, [Sheriff of] Yorkshire, to inquire into the taking of the meadow and pasture mentioned here, and how, when and at what time and by whom they were taken etc. and into the value of the same. And he is to return the inquisition held on this to the Exchequer one month after Easter. And a writ of Chancery is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that, according to that inquisition they are to give him a due allowance according to their discretion [if] he should have it.[To the second]: the same William de Houk is to inquire into what right [he has in] that ferry, and from what time and whose the land is on each side of the river. And if the river where that ferry was is held in severalty by John or not, and what harm he has received from this and from whom, and if the ferry that the King granted to the people of the town of Kingston is in the place where the other ferry used to be or elsewhere, and if it is to John's prejudice and how.
