Nature of request
The burgesses of Colchester state that by a charter of Richard I, confirmed by Henry III and by the present King, their borough, together with the hamlets of Mile End, Lexden, Berechurch, and Greenstead, has answered in all eyres, both of the Forest and others, by four men, but the justices in eyre for pleas of the Forest are now using certain words in the enrolment of an eyre of the Forest held before Roger Lestraunge and his companions to attempt to sever these four hamlets from the borough. They request a remedy.

Note
Roger le Strange is appointed Justice of the Forest south of the Trent on 21 October 1283 (CPR 1281-92 p.84). He is still Justice on 24 April 1296 (CPR 1292-1301 p.187), but by 30 June 1297 he is spoken of as 'late justice of the forest on this side Trent' (CPR 1292-1301 p.257). These dates would seem to give an approximate date for this petition.
