Description

Stephen de Franketon (Frankton), son of Stephen de Franketon (Frankton).
Name(s)
de Franketon (Frankton), Stephen
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Stephen, son of Stephen de Franketon, states that his father died seised of certain tenements in Wodehall in Ellesmere hundred, which is outside county boundaries, which lands he held in socage of Roger le Estrange, who holds them for term of life of the King's lease. After his father's death Roger seized them into his hand, dowered Stephen's widow from them, and gave the remaining two parts to Robert de Felton in disinheritance of the petitioner. He had a writ in Chancery to Roger le Estrange to do justice to him, and Roger has held an inquisition but has not acted on its findings. He requests a remedy, so that he can have his inheritance, or justices to inquire into the matter by people from Shropshire and from Ellesmere hundred, and to hear and determine it.
Nature of endorsement
Roger le Estrange is to be ordered that, in accordance with the first command given to him on this by the King and according to the verdict of the inquisition held on this, if one was held, he is to do [justice]. And if one was not held, he is now to have one held. And if he refuses . . . etc.

Note
According to Petitions Relating to Wales pp.435-6, Stephen de Franketon the elder died before 28 May 1292, which gives a terminus a quo for the petition. Petitions Relating to Wales pp.435-6 suggests that this petition might be as late as 1322, but both the hand and the content seem to suggest a date much nearer to the death of the petitioner's father.
