Description
Petitioners
Isabella [de Klynton (Knyveton)], widow of William de Klynton (Knyveton).
Name(s)
de Klynton (Knyveton)., Isabella
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Isabella, widow of William de Klynton (Knyveton), states that her husband was feloniously killed by James Coterel and other malefactors, and that she attempted to sue against him for this before justices in eyre in Nottinghamshire, but James came to Nottingham with four [-] men at arms and more, by the aid and maintenance of Simon de Bereford, and came before the justices armed, and was acquitted and delivered by men of his alliance and affinity, so that neither Isabella nor anyone else dares to challenge the inquest for fear of death. She therefore requests a remedy, and that the delivery might be reversed, so that she can sue against James for this death by the law of the land.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council, because of the noise and cry that has arisen concerning the horrible deed that has been committed before the justices, in disturbance of the law and in affray of the peace, that if it please the King all those who were party to this deed should be attached by their bodies to be before the King on a certain day to answer to the King for these things; and the person who sues this petition should declare in Chancery the names of the malefactors. And the record and process concerning this delivery are to be sent before the justices appointed to hold the King's pleas, and they are to be ordered that, when they have seen the said record and process, and when they have called before them the twelve jurors by whom he was acquitted, and heard the woman's complaint, they are further to do justice.

A commission of oyer et terminer was issued as a result of another complaint against James Coterel and others on 12 October 1331 (CPR 1330-4 p.205).
