Description
Petitioners
Mayor and community of merchants holding the staple of wools.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Mayor and community of merchants holding the staple of wools state that they had, of the grant of the King's progenitors and the King's confirmation, a half of the forfeitures of wools and other merchandise belonging to the staple and found to be not cocketed and without customs duly paid, in maintenance of their staple, but that writs and commissions for these forfeitures have now been granted to certain people, contrary to the earlier grant made to them, and to the ruin of the staple. They ask that these commissions might be repealed, and that they might have a grant and confirmation for the forfeitures as they did before.
Nature of endorsement
The Mayor is to show the charters and commissions for the half of the forfeitures mentioned here in Chancery, and when the person or persons who have the late commission of which he complains have been summoned, and when the arguments for the King and for them have been heard, if it is found that a wrong has been done to the said Mayor by the late commission, then justice is to be done to him on this.
