Description
Petitioners
Eleanor Fitz John, widow of Herbert Fitz John.
Name(s)
Fitz John, Eleanor
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Eleanor, widow of Herbert Fitz [John], states that her husband, with the consent of his father, dowered her with a third of the manor of Crookham in Berkshire, together with other lands and tenements. This manor is now in the King's hand, so that she has been expelled from her dower for eight years and more. She requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. She is to go to Chancery and show her deeds there, and show in whose hand the manor is, and if it is in the King's hand, justice is further to be given her concerning her dower.
Places mentioned
Harescombe, Gloucestershire
Crookham, Berkshire.
People mentioned
Herbert Fitz [John]
John Fitz Reynauld (Reginald), father of Herbert Fitz [John].
Note
The writ for CIPM, vol. VII no.95 is dated 22 February 1 Edward III (1327), but the petition it refers to would seem not to be this one, as it states that Eleanor's husband died on the morrow of the Nativity of John the Baptist, 14 Edward II (25 June 1321), and the petition states that she has been kept out of her dower for eight years and more, which would give a date of c. 1329.CCR 1330-3 p.449 is dated 28 March 1332.
