SC 8/257/12802
Date
[1324-1325]]
Description
Petitioners
Archbishops, bishops, prelates, earls, barons and others of the community of England, who hold their manors in chief of the King.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The archbishops, bishops, prelates, earls, barons and others of the community of England, who hold their manors in chief of the King, both inside forest and outside, and whose manors contain poor quality land which contributes little to the issues of their manors, state that they have been in the habit of leasing this poor quality land out for what they can get for it, but that the King's ministers have seized the land, because the people who have leased it do not have the King's permission to enter. They ask that they might be able to exploit their lands in this way and ease the poor people without hindrance, as this is more to the King's profit than his harm when the manors come into his hand through wardship or in some other manner.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.It cannot be done without a new law, something to which the community of the land does not yet wish to assent.
