de Claveringg (Clavering), John
Addressees

Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged, and the last four articles largely illegible.]John de Claveringg, lord of the manor of Blythburgh and Walberswick, states that the sea has made inroads into his lands during a storm, opening up a channel which runs between his lands, and makes eight complaints against the people of Dunwich, that in the King's second, third, fourth and fifth years they have stolen ships moored on his land and other things, beat and murdered his men, and lain in wait to prevent them going to sea during the herring season. He requests a swift remedy for these trespasses, grievances and oppressions.

Note
Dated to c. 1331 with reference to CPR 1330-4 p.199, dated 30 July 1331, and pp.235-136, dated 24 November 1331. This seems to be supported by internal evidence: an agreement made at Norwich, on 26 June in the King's fifth year (1331) is one of the last dates mentioned - although the last three complaints are likely to be later.
