Description
Petitioners
Goldsmiths of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged, and the latter part largely illegible.]The goldsmiths of London make four (?) complaints, for the benefit of the King and the realm:1) They state that merchants arriving in this country used to bring silver plate, to exchange for coin of the realm, but that they now bring counterfeit sterling coins, through which the goldsmiths are losing money.2) They state that it was ordained that the goldsmiths should have their shops in the high road in Cheap and that no silver plate or vessels of gold or silver should be sold except there or at the King's exchange, but that because no penalty is ordained against those who contravene this, and no-one is appointed to see that this is done, many goldsmiths have set up shop elsewhere, where the quality of their workmanship cannot be guaranteed.3) They state that the goldsmiths who work in these vennels and back-streets are producing faulty work, and deceiving those who buy it.4) They state that these goldsmiths are selling as silver goods not made from pure silver.
