Description

Richard Fleming, Bishop of Lincoln.
Name(s)
Fleming, Richard
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Occupation
Bishop of Lincoln
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged.]Richard, Bishop of Lincoln states that Richard Camoys held the manor of Ingescourt in Oxfordshire of his predecessor, Philip, Bishop of Lincoln, in right of his church of Lincoln, and that he died seised of it, leaving two sons under age, Ralph and Hugh, so that Philip had wardship of the manor and of Ralph. Philip then resigned his see, and Richard was elected. Ralph died, so Richard took the wardship of Hugh and of the manor, and came to an agreement with his predecessor concerning the expenses incurred for Hugh since Ralph's death. It was then found by an inquisition held at Thame that Hugh was kinsman and heir to Thomas and Elizabeth Camoys, who held lands of the King in Coombe, Great Chilworth and Little Chilworth, of Elizabeth's inheritance, so that William Kynwolmerssh, Treasurer of England, took custody of Hugh's body for the late King, and he is still in the custody of the present King. Richard asks the King and lords to consider this, and to do justice to him.
Nature of endorsement
The response to this petition is as follows:It is ordained and assented in this parliament held on the Monday before Martinmas in the first year of the reign of King Henry, sixth since the conquest, [that the] petition delivered into the same parliament should be sent to Chancery and that the Chancellor of England for the time being should do justice to the party named here on the matters contained in the petition as the law of the land demands.

Note
Dated by the response to the parliament of 1 Henry VI (November-December 1422). Formerly enclosed with no.444 of C 81/674, which is dated 11 February 1 Henry VI (1423). CPR 1422-9 p.91 is also dated 11 February 1423. Great and Little Chilworth are clearly the estates of Chilworth Musard and Chilworth Valery, two parts of the now-deserted township of Chilworth in Great Milton parish. However, which is which is unclear.
