Date
[c. 1386]
Description
Petitioners
Maurice de Bruyn, knight.
Name(s)
de Bruyn, Maurice
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Maurice de Bruyn states that Ralph Basset of Drayton held the manor of Shaw in Berkshire in chief of Edward III as of his crown, and that during Edward III's time he leased it to Maurice for term of life, without asking the King's permission. However, the King afterwards pardoned Maurice for a certain fine, and he held the manor until lately, when Ralph and others of his assent wrongly disseised him of it. Maurice brought an assize of novel disseisin, but he accuses Ralph of planning to alienate the manor without the King's permission, so that it will be seized into the King's hand, thus delaying the assize. He requests writs to the justices to proceed to take the assize, notwithstanding any taking of these tenements into the King's hand, provided that they do not proceed to judgment without another command from the King.
