Nature of request
The Burgesses of New Carmarthen state that they are oppressed by the malice and haughtiness of the Welsh, and ask the King, in salvation of their town, to confirm, with clause of licet, the charters of franchises granted to them by his progenitors. They also ask that they might have free election of a mayor and two bailiffs on the Monday after Michaelmas each year; that they and their successors might not be convicted of attainted in county courts at Carmarthen or Cardigan, or in the sessions, or in any other court by Welshmen, but only by English burgesses and true Englishmen; that they might elect a coroner each year on the Monday after Michaelmas, so that no escheator, sheriff or other minister might enter or interfere in their town to make execution, but that they might have return of writs; and that the county courts of Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire, and the great and petty sessions, might be held in their town as they used to be. They ask that all this might be done without paying a fee.
