Reference
SC 8/255/12713
Date
[? 1382]
Description
Petitioners
Adam de Houghton, Bishop of St David's.
Name(s)
de Houghton, Adam
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Bishop of St David's
Nature of request
The Bishop of St David's states that the chapel of Our Lady adjacent to the cathedral of St David's [has been granted] a college of eight chaplains by the Duke of Lancaster and the Bishop, who have given it certain parish churches for its sustenance. He asks the King to ratify and confirm these things.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] The King has granted this petition and delivered it to the Chancellor. [The manuscript breaks off at this point: there may be more.][None on dorse]
Places mentioned
St David's, [Pembrokeshire, Wales].
People mentioned
John [of Gaunt], Duke of Lancaster
Pope
Archbishop of Canterbury.
Note
St Mary's College was founded in 1365, but from the hand, this petition seems rather later. CPR 1399-1401 p.310 (dated 11 April 1400) is an inspeximus and confirmation of letters patent of Richard II, including letters patent dated 8 June 1382, whose content seems to approximate to what is being requested here. This therefore seems likely to be the petition that resulted in those letters patent.
