SC 8/255/12703
Date

Description
Petitioners
Warden and canons resident within the King's college of Windsor.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Warden and canons resident within the King's college of Windsor state that the King has granted them the profit of the fruits of their garden and of the herring of Yarmouth, to support the burden of hospitality in the college, and that his grandfather, their founder, ordained in their statutes that the offerings of the chapel would belong to them; and they ask the King to confirm these gifts, from the time when Thomas Butiller was first Warden of the college and for the future.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] This bill has been granted by the King.[On dorse] As Edward, late King of England, our grandfather, by his letters patent which etc. we on the first day of June in the first year etc. have confirmed, granted for himself and his heirs to our beloved in Christ the Warden and college of our free chapel within our castle of Windsor, 100 marks annually, to receive and have for themselves and their successors from the farm of our town of Northampton by the hands of the bailiffs of the same town for the time being, at the terms of Easter and Michaelmas by equal portions, in aid of the sustenance of the same Warden and college and the support of the charges on the aforesaid chapel in perpetuity as is more fully contained in these letters patent.
Places mentioned
Great Yarmouth, [Norfolk]
Windsor, [Berkshire]
Northampton, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
Edward [III], King of England
Thomas Butiller (Butler), Warden of the King's college of Windsor.
Note
CPR 1391-6 p.321 is dated 16 October 1393; the emphasis placed on the grant of these things to the resident canons but not the non-resident ones is absent from the petition, but it seems likely that this is in fact the response. In any case the petition would seem to date from around this time. It is possible that the petition dates from the King's first year, but the wording of the endorsement seems more likely to suggest a further confirmation of a grant confirmed in the first year.
