Description
Petitioners
William Dykere of Cleeve and Joan Gaunselyne, his wife.
Name(s)
Dykere; Gaunselyne, William; Joan
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners request the king's assistance, so that they may be restored to Joan's rightful inheritance to a tenement and certain lands in Little Torrington. They state that Joan is the daughter and heir of Avice Gaunselyne, daughter of Walter Gaunselyne, and should have inherited this property, but that Schoyle, husband of Avice, falsely alienated the property to Thomas Gay, passing to him all the charters and muniments. These are now held by his daughter Merand, who has falsely concealed the charters, producing new ones to the petitioners' disinheritance, and despite constant writs to the sheriffs over 13 years, nothing has been done. They request that the current sheriff, Bonville, be ordered to examine Merand's claims, and make restitution to the petitioners.
