Nature of request
William, Prior of Llanthony by Gloucester requests justice since he arraigned an assize of novel disseisin before Charlton, Cassy and Abberbury of his free tenement in Gloucester against Banbury, Pope and the community of Gloucester, who claimed the same as parcel of the town in the possession of John, who granted the town to their predecessors, whereupon the prior obtained a writ directed to the same justices to proceed with the assize notwithstanding the allegations, and it was found that the prior was seised in right of his church from time of memory and that he had been disseised thereof, whereupon he obtained a writ to the same justices to proceed to judgment which was accordingly given in his favour. But the bailiffs and community of Gloucester bribed the escheator to an enquiry in the escheatry within the town, upon which it was presented before him that the prior purchased the messuage from Heed in the eleventh year of the King's reign [1387-8], and he accordingly seized it.
