Name(s)

Addressees
King.
Occupation
prebendary of St David's
Nature of request
Hanmere recounts that although Urban VI, by his bull, provided him to the prebend of St David's, Porter later took a collation from Houghton and had possession of the prebend, from which he was ousted by the sub-executor of the Bull who put Hanmere back in possession where he remained for the rest of Houghton's life and after until Brugge, by Porter's resignation, purchased collation to the prebend by suggesting to the King that the prebend was void, owing to the temporalities being in his hand, when the prebend was occupied by Hanmere. The King sued a writ of quare impedit, sent to the sheriff of Herefordshire, against Hanmere in the Common Bench, and process continued until the inquisition, to his great cost since the county in which the inquisition is to be taken is a hundred miles from the prebend. The petitioner requests that the King take the case into his hand, and commit it to two bishops to discuss and determine, and order his justices of the Common Bench to surcease in the plea while the case is pending.

Note
Dated by Rees to 1389-90. The petition refers to the death of Adam Houghton, bishop of St Davids, who died on 13 February 1389, but it must pre-date 9 February 1390, since this is the date of the Chancery warrant with which it was formerly enclosed (C 81/513 no.6019).
