Nature of request
The prior and convent of the Charterhouse of Axholme request that the King confirm forever the letters patent of Richard II of the twentieth year of his reign [1396-7] granting licence for Thomas to found a Charterhouse at Epworth, to grant the prior and convent 100 acres in Epworth forever, to transfer to them the priory of Monks Kirby with the manors of Newbold-on-Avon, Copston and Walton, held of the abbot and convent of St Nicholas of Angers, to appoint Moreby as prior and to put him and his fellow monks in full possession of the priory. Because Thomas died before the priory of Monks Kirby was transferred to them, they also request that the King grant licence to John, Earl Marshal and his heirs to transfer to them the said priory with the manors of Newbold-on-Avon, Copston and Walton forever. They also request that the King grant licence to John, Earl Marshal to grant to them in free almoign land in a place called 'Coliercope' in the parish of Owston in his park of Melwood held of the King in chief and a yearly rent of 20 marks to be taken from his manor of Epworth, nothwithstanding the Statute of Mortmain.
